tHank you to all our partner - we could not do this without you
biosphere expeditionsBiosphere Expeditions is the reason we are here. Starting in 2011, they began training Maldivians in Reef Check as part of their placement programme, until a critical mass of local people was reached to take on the baton and found what is now Reef Check Maldives. The founders of Reef Check Maldives are all graduates of the placement programme, as are most Trainers. We could not have done this without them. Thank you.

REEF CHECKReef Check is the mothership and start of it all. Founded in 1996, Reef Check exists to help preserve the oceans and reefs which are critical to our survival, yet are being destroyed. With headquarters in Los Angeles and volunteer teams in more than 90 countries, Reef Check works to protect tropical coral reefs and California rocky reefs through education, research and conservation. We are on of its worldwide NGO spawns ;)

MCSThe Marine Conservation Society (MCS) brought Reef Check to the Maldives in 1997 and for many years their (and our very own) Dr. Jean-Luc Solandt was the Reef Check co-ordinator for the country. In 2011 Dr. Solandt teamed up with Biosphere Expeditions and together they started conducting an annual reef survey aboard the Carpe Diem (see below). The rest is history, they say, and we have now taken over the baton of local co-ordinator.

rufford foundationThe Rufford Foundation has been instrumental in providing funding for Reef Check training of Maldivians, marine resources management, gathering data on the recovery from the 1998 and 2015/16 bleaching events, effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), and much more. This financial support, amongst other things, has been vital for getting Reef Check Maldives off the ground. Thank you for this.

carpe diem maldivesThe Carpe Diem Maldives and her sister boat the Carpe Vita have been the live-aboard bases for our annual reef research expeditions since 2011. It's a great privilege and joy to be on these boats and survey our reefs. We have also trained Carpe Diem staff in Reef Check and they organise regular Crown-of-Thorns removal and other reef conservation activities. Thank you for all you are doing.

baros maldivesThe dive centre at Baros Maldives was the first to be certified as a Reef Check Centre (in 2010). Since then they have regularly surveyed their house reef, provided data to Reef Check, have started a coral garden to combat the increasingly frequent bleaching events and supported our efforts. Thank you! If your resort or business would like to get something similar going, please get in touch.

LA MERLand and Marine Environmental Resource Group or LaMER Group was established in 2000 after originally operating as the Coastal Environmental Consultants Division for Riyan Design and Management Consultants Pvt. Ltd. LaMER has been the vital link between the Rufford Foundation, Biosphere Expeditions and Reef Check, enabling local training and capacity-building to the point where local people could form this local Reef Check NGO.

are you next?If you are a business with a CSR programme or a funder with an interest in marine conservation, please do get in touch. If you are a resort, we can help you become a Reef Check Centre or survey your house reef regularly, involving your staff and guests in the process. Or we can enter into a partnership to train more Maldivians, thereby building capacity and enhancing education. We look forward to hearing from you.
